A new funding model places more than 150,000 KCSE candidates in universities.
153,274 applicants who took the 2023 KCSE have been assigned to institutions under the Student-Centred Funding Model, according to information released by the Ministry of Education.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu states that scholarships or self-sponsorship will pay these pupils’ tuition.
In a statement released on Friday, June 7, Machogu said that since the new funding model’s deployment in September 2023, a sizable number of students have applied for support. This funding model divides funding from the placement of first-year students at universities.
“As of May 2024, 151,933 TVET students and 112,741 university students filed for loans and scholarships from the Universities Fund and HELB, respectively. TVET trainees received Sh11.3 billion in funding, while university students received Sh24.76 billion in loans and scholarships, according to Machogu.
Among the 201,146 candidates who passed the 2023 KCSE exam and were eligible for university admission, KUCCPS has assigned 153,274 students to different university degree programs.
As the second group of beneficiaries is ready to enroll in college, the government has mandated that tuition for degree programs be paid for by loans, scholarships, and parental contributions.
The contribution made by parents or guardians for each student will only be revealed following the student’s funding application and completion of an assessment based on need. This will then establish how much loan and scholarship they need,” Machogu explained.
In order to allow qualified students to apply for funding, the Cabinet Secretary ordered HELB and the Universities Fund (UF) to launch the funding portal by June 15.
On July 31, 2024, the outcomes of the financing application procedure are scheduled to be made public.
Additionally, Machogu pushed funding organizations and academic institutions to start a program of public education on the new funding paradigm.
He said that by doing this, parents and pupils would be better able to comprehend the advantages of the new approach.
