A new program that aims to empower underprivileged children has just been introduced, providing 160 people with scholarships for technical and vocational training.
The goal of the Wezesha Vijana program is to improve the recipients’ prospects of finding profitable jobs and business ventures.
A minimum of 105 ladies and 55 males from low-income families have received the scholarships.
Starting in September 2023, the program provides training in a range of disciplines, such as automotive repairs, food and beverage, welding, plumbing, fashion and design, beauty, driving, painting, and floor tiling.
Catholic Relief Services Country Representative Rebecca Hallam made the following statement during the scholarship presentation: “We are here today to recognize a group of exceptional young individuals who have been selected for TVET scholarships.”
“You have shown that you are willing to embrace learning in order to challenge yourself and to strive for excellence, so your talent, determination, and resilience have not gone unnoticed.”
Diana Kamau, a 19-year-old recipient, expressed her enthusiasm at the chance.
“I’m excited to learn new painting techniques and expertise. That I will be a female painter makes me pleased. Lack of money would have made it difficult for me to attend college without this scholarship,” the woman stated.
The initiative supports the government’s objective of bolstering technical and vocational education to improve the nation’s ability to provide kids with real-world training.
The Safaricom Foundation and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are the program sponsors for Wezesha Vijana.
