A student from UON wins the 23rd Chinese Proficiency Competition Division Finals.
Tuesday saw the victory of Lawrence Kamau Gachuru, who represents the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, in the 23rd Chinese proficiency competition for Kenya division finals for college students.
In the ‘One World One Family’ tournament, which included 20 students from various colleges around the nation, Gachuru came out on top.
He described it as incredible that he prevailed over the fierce competition.
“It was quite astounding. It has been quite the journey, and I am grateful to God for enabling me to complete it without him,” he remarked.
From giving a statement in Mandarin to demonstrating a talent that touched on Chinese culture and participating in a Q&A session, Gachuru expressed his enjoyment of the entire tournament.
He claimed to have started learning Mandarin at the University of Notre Dame’s Confucius Institute in 2022.
Gachuru will represent Kenya at the international competition in China after winning.
“I have never been to China but I am eager to go there,” Gachuru stated.
With support from tech companies, the tournament was organized by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya in collaboration with Confucius Institutes from four different colleges.
Vice-Chancellor Stephen Kiama of the University of Nairobi stated that the Chinese language competition has become more well-known on a global scale in both the cultural and educational spheres.
Only twenty of the almost 200 students who competed at the campus level from various colleges had advanced to the finals, according to him.
“The Chinese language serves as a way to connect students globally,” Kiama stated.
There were rivals from USIU, Egerton, Moi Kenyatta University, and Strathmore University.
Through these competitions, China and Kenya are constructing a shared future, according to Minister Counselor Zhang Zhizhong of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya.
“But we can not build this community with a shared future without a common language,” he continued.
