All 46,000 JSS intern teachers will be employed on a permanent basis.
As promised, the Kenya Kwanza government will provide permanent and pensionable employment to all 46,000 Junior Secondary School teachers.
Enough money has been set aside for that, according to a statement made by National Assembly Finance Committee Chair Kimani Kuria at a parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday.
“The PG was also informed that adequate funds -KSh18 billion – have been provided for the employment of all 46,000 Junior Secondary teachers who are on internship,” Kimani stated.
In an effort to address the teacher shortage, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is also anticipated to hire 20,000 interns starting next month.
Additionally, funds have been given to hire 20,000 interns for the upcoming month. Teachers will now be transitioned from internships to permanent positions with pensions, following policy, he continued.
In the 2024–25 budget, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u had first suggested setting aside Sh13.4 billion for the permanent and pensionable hire of junior secondary school teachers.
In mid-May of this year, the Teachers Service Commission presented a larger figure to Members of Parliament in order to cover the costs of hiring all 46,000 interns.
By July 1, 2024, the Commission estimates that it will cost Sh30 billion to hire all 46,000 interns on permanent positions.
In January 2025, TSC said then that it intended to hire 26,000 intern instructors.
Shortly before the Finance Bill, 2024 was introduced in Parliament, the PG was called in response to Occupy Parliament demonstrations aimed at pressuring the National Assembly to reject the bill.
