Amount of basic salary and allowances that JSS interns will get.
According to government announcements, around 26,000 contract teachers working in junior secondary schools in 2023 will receive permanent, pensionable terms on July 1.
Many of those who had expressed concerns about their wages—some of which they claimed were insufficient to maintain their livelihoods—are relieved by the confirmation.
Every month, those working as JSS interns received Sh20,000, while students in lower primary received Sh15,000.
There is no entitlement to an allowance or the teachers’ health insurance plan for intern instructors.
One can wonder, though, how much they will make permanently and in terms of pensions since that their protest has lasted more than two weeks.
Most JSS interns have degrees or diplomas in hand.
They will begin at work group C2 after their permanent and pensionable terms have been established. This group is comparable to a primary school senior instructor.
Job group C2’s pay ranges from Sh34,955 to Sh43,694 at its highest.
A new teacher would start at Sh34,955 and the compensation will be increased automatically after three years.
Nairobi residents in job category C2 are entitled to a housing allowance of Sh16,500.
Major municipality residents would receive Sh12,800, while minor municipality residents will receive Sh9,600. People living in other places receive a housing stipend of Sh7,500.
Additionally, the teacher is eligible for a one-time payment of Sh6,000 for yearly leave.
Every teacher in employment group C2 is eligible for a Sh4,000 commuter allowance.
A hardship grant of Sh10,900 is also available to those who work in areas affected by hardship.
In addition, the instructor will profit from the employer-sponsored health insurance plan.
