Another Setback for Teachers Who Never Received a C on the KCSE.
According to the recommendations made by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), a person must now have received at least a C plain grade and above on the KCSE in order to be eligible to work as a teacher or teachers.
The goal of the suggestions is to eliminate all P1 certificate teachers.
According to TSC, the new proposal is a component of the Amendment Bill, which aims to recognize teachers who teach at the lowest grade as having a diploma but not a certificate.
In defense of this stance, TSC has stated that its sole goal is to provide high-quality education by assigning qualified teachers to classroom settings.
Students who currently hold a mean KCSE grade of D are eligible to apply for P1 teaching certifications.
But according to the new proposal, a diploma is the minimal need to become an ECDE teacher, hence all diploma teachers have to have a C simple mean grade.
According to Mr. Cavin Anyuor, the Legal Affairs Director of the TSC, candidates for teaching positions must have received at least a C- in English and a D in mathematics.
He continued by saying that individuals who received an E in English cannot instruct a student until they have grasped the material and passed the test.
Anyuor argued that the commission requires qualified instructors who have access to qualified individuals, such as pilots and others.
Speaking at the media-led sensitization event in Nairobi, Anyuor went on to say that the TSC has the authority to set requirements for teachers it registers, as it is mandated to do.
Anyuor also stated that, in contrast to other professions like law, medicine, and engineering, which have high entry requirements, the teaching profession typically has low entry requirements.
He went on to say that poor teachers will not create engineers or pilots because teaching is the mother of all these professions.
He went on to say that in order to send English teachers to Germany, the Ministry of Education is in contact with Labor and Foreign Affairs.
For those currently in colleges pursuing P1 teaching certificates, TSC boss Dr Nancy Macharia issued an assurance to them that there is no need to worry.
Macharia said that the commission is still consulting with the Ministry of Education on the way forward for them..
A part from the setting of the minimum standards for registration as a teacher above, TSC equally seeks to prescribe continuous professional development programs that is meant for newly inserted sections immediately after act of section 23 .
Incase the proposal is passed, it will allow the TSC to issue and cancel certificates of registration to all teachers.
