Applications for varsity funding for the 2023 KCSE cohort will open on June 15th.
Students in the 2023 KCSE cohort can now apply for financing through the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education financing site starting on June 15 in order to be considered for varsity admissions in September.
This is in response to an order sent to HEF on Friday by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, requesting that the portal be launched by the middle of next month.
“I direct the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) and the Universities Fund (UF) to open the Higher Education Funding portal-www.hef.co.ke on June 15, 2024, to allow the eligible students to apply for funding,” Machogu stated.
Furthermore, prior to September admissions, Machogu stated that the 2023 KCSE class will be informed of the precise tuition amount that their parents will have to pay.
Machogu pointed out that there are three ways to pay for college expenses: household contributions made by parents, government-provided loans and scholarships, and other means.
“The funding allocation for each component will depend on the assessed level of need of each applicant,” Machogu stated.
According to the CS, some parents believe they will have to pay the entire amount stated in the acceptance letters that each university sends out.
“The government further clarifies that the Parent’s (Household) contribution for each student will only be known after the student has applied for funding and assessment based on the level of need is completed,” Machogu stated.
According to him, this will then establish how much loan and scholarship they need.
In addition, he informed students, parents, and guardians that the grant application results will be made public on July 31, 2024.
According to their admission letters and joining instructions, all first-year students would report to their respective universities as instructed, he said.
Machogu stated that universities will inform all of their first-year students of the amount that parents (household) must pay as soon as the funding application results are made public.
Machogu gave universities and financial organizations the order to start educating stakeholders, parents, and guardians about the Student-Centred financial Model right away.
Inaugurated in May 2023, the Student Centers Funding Model went into effect in September of the same year.
Financial help will also be provided to the second batch of students enrolling in universities under the new funding scheme this year.
Machogu stated that KUCCPS has placed 153,274 students in various degree programs at universities out of the 201,146 candidates who passed the 2023 KCSE Examination and qualified for university entry.
“Based on the placement results, some Universities have released letters of admission and fee structures for the courses as displayed in the KUCCPS portal during the application process,” he stated.
MPs’ directives have resulted in the recall of the letters thus far.
Applications for varsity funding for the 2023 KCSE cohort will open on June 15th.
