As schools resume, the government will step up its roadside enforcement.
As schools return for the second term on Monday, Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public Works, has announced plans to step up road inspections.
Murkomen revealed that comprehensive inspections will be carried out to make sure cars comply with safety regulations beginning on Monday.
a drive-by crackdown
“We are prepared to conduct comprehensive inspections to ensure vehicles comply with safety standards,” the Chief of Staff said.
He underlined that because there will be a large number of students traveling the next week, it is important to be on the lookout for any unroadworthy cars that might be forced into duty.
“We are committed to ensuring our kids’ safety on the roadways as they get ready to head back to school on Monday. While in Homabay, Murkomen gave an assurance, “We have put in place procedures to guarantee comprehensive inspections of every vehicle to guarantee compliance with road safety standards.”
“We will keep up our aggressive campaign to promote road safety during the coming week. The Ministry of Interior will provide protection, and traffic police will make sure everyone can travel without incident. We will rigorously check any cars that may cause problems owing to being unroadworthy, especially those accommodating the inflow of students, as over a million students are expected to travel,” the speaker continued.
Murkomen also asked public service vehicles to emphasize safe travel without getting lost and advised parents to discharge their children early.
“In order to make traveling and monitoring easier, I implore parents to release their kids early. I beg of all public service vehicle (PSV) drivers to put our children’s safety first when they are traveling,” he said in closing.
The Ministry of Education on behalf of the government said that all schools will resume for the second term on Monday, May 13, 2024.
President William Ruto made this decision after devastating floods across the nation forced a postponement of the resumption of schools until further notice.
Postponed reopening of schools
Ruto gave the Ministry of Education instructions to reschedule the reopening of schools for a second time in a State of the Nation Address on Friday, May 3, 2024.
The President rescheduled the reopening of schools to a later date after first pushing back the original April 29 opening date to May 6.
Ruto asked MPs to rearrange their CDF allotments on Friday in order to give rebuilding damaged school infrastructure top priority.
