CS Machogu: 7 counties where schools would not reopen are Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu.
According to Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education, several schools in the counties of Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu might not reopen on Monday as scheduled.
The CS claims that before instruction can resume, these places would need to undergo several renovations as they are still plagued by flood-related issues.
He stated that the names of the impacted schools are still being received and that they will provide a detailed list as soon as one is available.
But he added that the ministry is now investigating elective courses that students can take at the impacted institutions.
“We are attempting to investigate alternative methods for facilitating learning in the small percentage of schools—less than 5%, and possibly as low as 2%—that offer instruction. In seven particular counties, we have not yet received the names. A select regions of the nation, including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Tana River, and others, according to Machogu.
As he spoke, he was visiting Nairobi’s schools to make sure they were ready for classes to resume.
A day after President William Ruto said that classes would resume on Monday, May 13, the Education CS made his remarks.
“All parents are told that it will now be safe based on the weathermen’s and the Kenyan government’s evaluation. All schools will reopen on Monday of next week, so parents must get their kids ready for school. We have made the necessary preparations, consulted with Members of Parliament, and provided resources through NG-CDF for the repair of classrooms and other learning facilities throughout Kenya,” he stated.
Barely a week has passed since he declared that the school’s reopening will be postponed until further notice.
Ruto had instructed the Ministry of Education to defer the reopening of all schools on Friday of last week.
According to Ruto, the postponement came about as a result of a warning from the meteorological agency that the floods would probably get worse as long as the rains continued.
“Weather reports present a bleak image. For the remainder of this month and maybe beyond, the rains will continue to increase in length and intensity,” he stated.
“The Cyclone is predicted to cause torrential rain, strong winds and powerful and dangerous waves, which could disrupt marine activities in the Indian Ocean and settlements along the Kenyan coast.”
The original plan was for the schools to resume on April 29.
