CS Machogu, Reasons why released a statement delaying the late-night reopening of schools.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, has given an explanation for the late-night edict that delayed the reopening of schools by one week. The move has caused differing opinions around the nation.
According to CS Machogu, who spoke exclusively to Nation.Africa, the Ministry of Education decided to spare students’ lives after learning from different counties that travel had been negatively impacted by the severe downpours. Floods have impacted basic amenities in a number of schools.
He said that the information used to support the last-minute decision to postpone the reopening of schools was gathered throughout the course of Saturday and Sunday.
“Leave alone the inconvenience [of the postponement] that people are discussing; we’re talking about life, which is extremely important.” If the existing state of affairs persists and a catastrophic event occurs, Machogu will once more be held accountable. CS Machogu told Nation.Africa, “I made the decision to save lives.”
“We’re monitoring the situation very closely,” he stated.
Due to the continuous, intense rains, Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Ezekiel Machogu has decided to postpone the beginning of schools for the second term until May 6, 2024. snapchat.com/hUF8Cfk9IG— April 28, 2024, EduMinKenya (@EduMinKenya)
This is a reversal of the position taken by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, who declared last week that classes would resume in spite of the persistently high rain, with the exception of the few institutions that were flooded.
When parents and students in Kenya learned of the postponement when they got up, their reactions were a mixture of relief and shock.
The majority of public elementary schools were scheduled to open today, and many had already made the trip, only to be told to return home upon arrival.
Parents who had already gotten their kids up early to go to school chastised the Ministry for not alerting them sooner.
Some parents voiced their displeasure, claiming that their children who attend distant schools had already left the previous evening prior to the CS’s announcement. Teachers who work far from home had also traveled in advance of the reopening of the schools.
“It is incorrect. In any organization, communicating at the appropriate moment is essential. This is especially true in education, where all students are customers.
Assume that some parents had reserved a long-term seat on the SGR [train] for their kids and had already departed for the station when they received word of the postponement, the parent said.
