Despite the JSS intern teachers’ strike, learning is still happening -PS.
Despite intern teachers downing their tools, Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has assured that learning is happening in junior secondary schools.
According to Belio, learning is ongoing because the students are receiving tutoring from more than just the JSS intern teachers.
He declared that anything that impedes education will always be of concern to the ministry.
“Yes, there are disruptions, but our kids are learning and we have backup plans.” Intern teachers are not the only people that educate these students, I can promise you of that,” Belio stated.
While the interns object, the PS stated that other instructors who are teaching JSS students and have received proper training have also been rated.
He gave a speech on Thursday at Moi Girls Nairobi, when he declared the 2024 school census process open.
Belio agreed that interns play a crucial role in JSS education.
“We are ensuring that we minimize the disruption that has been caused by the protests by intern teachers,” Belio stated.
He also guaranteed that money had been put aside by the State to confirm the intern teachers’ appointments to permanent positions with pensions.
“We are assuring our intern teachers, that if they check in our budget for the next financial year, we have provided for their confirmation because we said they shall be undertaking a two-year internship programme which will automatically lead them to Pand P terms,” he stated.
“If they are slightly patient, then they will get the terms of employment they want.”
All throughout the nation, the teachers have been holding protests.
Nairobi JSS interns staged protests on May 13 and promised to keep up the demonstrations until they were given permanent jobs with pensions.
Currently, the intern instructors work under an annual contract.
Chairperson Owino Okelo led the Nairobi County JSS intern teachers on a protest march from the bus terminal to the TSC headquarters.
“There will be constant strikes by JSS teachers in Nairobi and the country at large until we are confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms,” he stated.
