The government has announced that 26000 intern teachers in junior secondary schools will be confirmed for permanent positions with pensions. For the last three weeks, the teachers have been on strike. Teachers have been requesting improved salary and working conditions.
Recently, the internship program was ruled unlawful by the court. As a result, the court ordered TSC to reimburse the intern teachers for the time they were employed at low salary.
Furthermore, by August 1st, 2024, the court requested that TSC confirm these teachers into permanent and pensionable terms.
The news about their confirmation has relieved most instructors, if not all of them. They will be able to conveniently organize their bills and make good life advancement as a result.
Junior secondary school intern teachers receive a gross salary of Ksh 20,000 each month. Primary school interns receive a gross salary of Ksh. 15,000 each month. Nevertheless, statutory deductions are applied to these stipends.
The depressing aspect of this story is that these teachers don’t have any financial support. As such, the teachers in question are not covered by health insurance.

The degree interns graduating teachers will start at job group C2 after confirmation. This work category is similar to that of the senior teacher at a primary school.
Pay scale for C2 Instructors
The pay range for instructors in job category C2 falls between sh 36,621 and sh 43,694, which represents the highest income for C2 teachers.
Beginning with a base pay of sh 36,621, newly hired teachers will see an automatic compensation increase after three years of service.
Teachers employed in Nairobi and the surrounding areas are eligible to receive a housing allowance of sh 16,500.
Individuals residing in minor municipalities will receive Ksh 9600, while those in other large municipalities will receive Sh 12,800. People in other areas receive 7,500 sh.
Teachers will also be eligible for an annual leave allowance of Ksh 6,000, which will be paid in January each year.
Additionally, all teachers are eligible to receive a commuting allowance. Teachers employed in hard-hit areas are also compensated with a hardship payment of Ksh 10,900.
