Govt Issues Warning Against Reopening Schools During Heavy Floods.
On the Hot 96 Breakfast Show, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura asked school administrators to adhere to President William Ruto’s order.
Given the possibility that the situation would worsen over the next few days, the president requested that the Ministry of Education delay the reopening of all schools “until further notice.”
The reopening date of April 29, 2024 was postponed to May 6, 2024 due to heavy rainfall.
Ruto ordered the Ministry of Education to delay the nation’s schools’ second-term resumption until further notice in a statement he released on Friday.
Mwaura continued by saying that anyone who disobey the rules will be held legally accountable.
When the schools that serve as rescue centers reopen, Mwaura inquired as to where the displaced public members should move.
In order to give displaced persons a temporary place to stay, he added, the administration is organizing the transfer and evacuation of impacted members of the public.
The interior ministry said on Sunday that the number of people killed by flooding and other consequences of Kenya’s heavy rains has increased to 228.
It is predicted that in May, the intense rains that have recently caused extensive flooding and landslides around the nation will get worse.
More flooding is “expected in low-lying areas, riparian areas, and urban areas, while landslides and mudslides may occur in areas with steep slopes, escarpments, and ravines,” a ministry statement reads.
In the largest economy in East Africa, homes, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure have been destroyed by flooding.
The government reports that the bad weather has caused at least 164 injuries and 212,630 displaced individuals.
