Govt Sends Parents and School Principals Another Late-Night Directive.
In light of the nationwide flooding disaster, the Ministry of Education sent out another late-night instruction to parents and school administrators on Monday.
Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang asked all school administrators to retain all students who had reported to classes on Monday in a letter addressed to them.
They also have to promptly inform all parents of the new reopening date.
The County Directors of Education were notified to provide daily reports on the steps being taken to prevent flooding in schools and make sure food supplies are stored properly to minimize losses.
Attacks on the government have been launched because of the timeliness of the Ministry’s notices. This comes after Education CS Ezekiel Machogu announced in a transmission made at 1:00 am that the reopening of schools would be delayed until May 6, 2024.
Machogu emphasized in the letter that the decision was necessary to protect the students’ safety and was prompted by the flooding scenario.
Parents were confused since some of them had already made travel arrangements for their kids to report the next day.
Because there was no transportation available, those who had already started the trip were left stranded at different bus stops.
Parents of students also expressed doubts about the government authorities’ lack of decisiveness, recalling that just a few days before PS Kipsang had vowed that schools will reopen in spite of the floods that destroyed vital infrastructure in several establishments.
Kipsang stated at the time that the Ministry was suitably ready for the second term to resume.
He sent assurance that a multi-agency committee, headed by President William Ruto, had a directive in place to address the difficulties.
“We are excited for our kids to start school and are prepared. In order to guarantee our children’s safety as they return to their education, we as a ministry will actively participate in the multitasking efforts with our colleagues,” Kipsang stated on April 25, 2024.
“We will anchor our plan on both formative and summative assessment so that we can give our children equal opportunities,” he stated.
