Govt sets aside Sh13.4 billion to employ JSS intern teachers on a permanent basis.
The budget for 2024–2025 includes Sh13.4 billion for the permanent and pensionable hiring of junior secondary school teachers, according to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u.
In mid-May of this year, the Teachers Service Commission presented a larger figure to Members of Parliament in order to cover the costs of hiring all 46,000 interns.
By July 1, 2024, the Commission estimated that it will cost the taxpayers Sh30 billion to hire all 46,000 interns on permanent positions.
In January 2025, TSC said then that it intended to hire 26,000 intern instructors.
The employer of teachers informed lawmakers that it will take Sh8.3 billion to certify 26,000 instructors for long-term positions.
Since the start of the second term, 46,000 teachers who were hired as interns under contract have been demonstrating across the nation in hopes of securing permanent jobs with pensions.
In an attempt to get the interns back to work, the commission sent warning letters as a result of their May 13 protests.
TSC decided to fire some of the protesting interns after sending them show-cause letters on May 22.
The Star was able to obtain termination letters dated June 6th, which revealed that multiple educators were fired due to what TSC referred to as “professional misconduct”.
“10,348 who absented themselves from work from May 13, 2024, were given show-cause letters to explain their whereabouts,” according to the Commission.
Only 9,606 instructors, out of 10,348 who got the show-cause letters, were able to reply within the allotted two weeks, according to TSC.
In response to the demonstrations, TSC fired 742 interns.
“Of them, 742 teachers who did not report to work and whose whereabouts were not known had their contracts terminated and replaced,” stated the TSC.
The 46,000 interns are divided between the 742 teachers, or 1.6% of the total.
