Govt to Provide Managing Directors with at Least KCSE Grade D+ Training.
Managing directors and senior employees of small-scale local construction companies have been invited by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) to participate in intense training in order to gain the necessary skills for managing the company.
KeRRA announced that senior staff and contractors would receive effective training on how to do road maintenance and enhancements in a notice that was printed in the local dailies.
Additionally, labor-based techniques for restoring roads to low-volume sealed standards will be covered in the course. The contractors will have to perform road maintenance in six counties—Laikipia, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit—after completing the training.
“In this connection, KeRRA now invites small-scale local construction firms interested in carrying out low volume seal road rehabilitation works in the above-mentioned counties to apply for consideration for training,” stated a portion of the announcement.
A portion of the European Union monies will be used by KeRRA to support the training initiative.
Necessary Requirement
Managing directors who wish to be considered for selection in the training program must meet three minimum requirements: a labor-based R2000 contractors training certificate from the Kenya Institute of Highways & Building Technology (KIHBT), an additional technical or professional training, and a minimum KCSE grade D+ and above.
Site supervisors must hold a KIHBT training certificate, a diploma in civil engineering, and experience supervising at least one R2000 gravelling project.
Using local resources to maintain and repair roads to the highest standards is part of the R2000 strategy.
Training Length
Managing Directors will participate in a three-week program that consists of two weeks of classroom instruction in Isiolo and one week of hands-on training on the demonstration road in Isiolo.
The five-week course for site supervisors will consist of two weeks of hands-on training on the demonstration road in Isiolo and three weeks of instruction in Isiolo.
Choosing
All applications will be reviewed by KeRRA, which will then choose applicants who fit the requirements for an interview. Oral and written interviews will be used in the second step to evaluate the candidates’ suitability and confirm the accuracy of the material submitted.
Verifying the veracity of the submitted material and recommending to KeRRA that they provide an official invitation for training constitute the last step.
Twenty-five Managing Directors and fifty site supervisors will be invited for training after the selection process.
“Only those contractors who complete the training course successfully will be considered in carrying out low volume seal road works by labour-based methods,” said KeRRA.
It will be necessary to pay a commitment fee of Ksh50,000, which represents 20% of the training costs.
Upon finishing the course, students may receive up to 30 recognized points. The National Construction Authority (NCA) states that in order to renew their practicing license, contractors must participate in a training program worth at least 10 recognized points per year.
