How Machogu’s Midnight Directive Left Students Stranded.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, unilaterally moved back the start date of classes to May 6, leaving students all throughout the nation without anywhere to go.
Machogu issued a midnight edict stating that it was wise to reschedule the event because of the flooding that was occurring in several parts of the nation.
This was created a few hours prior to Monday, April 29th, the formal start of classes.
Students in Ruaka waited for school buses that never arrived to pick them up, shivering in the bitter cold.
Some students did not read the edict that was shared on social media, even though some school heads had.
Students in Kitengela and Athi River stood in watery puddles, oblivious to the fact that the Ministry of Education had ordered them not to attend to school just hours before.
In order to go to school on time, the pupils and their guardians had braved the muddy and flooded roads and trails.
“Even the teachers here were ready for class. One of the instructors at a Kitengela school “The administration has decided that we hold a school meeting instead.”
In addition, school parents spoke to Kenyans.co.ke about having already made travel arrangements for their pupils.
One parent voiced concern, saying, “My children were at Nairobi Country Bus early in the morning as we did not know about the directive.”
Another father asked if there would be a refund because he had already purchased tickets for Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) trains.
Kenyans were already warned by the authorities not to cross flooded waterways to avoid unnecessary risk.
