How much will JSS interns get as a basic salary and allowance?
About 26,000 contract teachers working in junior secondary schools in 2023 will receive permanent, pensionable terms starting on July 1st, according to government announcements.
Many of them were relieved to hear the confirmation because they had expressed concerns about their earnings, which some had argued were insufficient to maintain their way of life.
Monthly compensation for JSS interns was Sh20,000, whereas lower primary students received Sh15,000.
There is no teacher health insurance plan or allowance available to intern teachers.
But with their protest now going on for more than two weeks, one could wonder how much money they will make in terms of pensions and permanent income.
The vast majority of JSS interns have degrees or diplomas.
They will commence at job group C2 upon confirmation of their permanent and pensionable terms. At the elementary school level, this group is comparable to a senior teacher.
The pay scale for Job group C2 ranges from Sh34,955 to Sh43,694, with fluctuations in between.
After three years, a new teacher’s salary will automatically increase from Sh34,955.
A housing allowance of Sh16,500 is provided to residents of Nairobi under job category C2.
Major municipalities will give out Sh12,800, while smaller municipalities will give out Sh9,600. The housing allowance for those living in other locations is Sh7,500.
A one-time payment of Sh6,000 for annual leave is also due to the instructor.
A commuter allowance of Sh4,000 is payable to all teachers in job category C2.
Employees in hard-hit areas are also eligible for a Sh10,900 hardship grant.
In addition, the teacher will gain access to the employer’s health insurance plan.
