How the State is getting ready to admit students in Grade 10 to Senior Schools in 2026.
The first group of Grade 10 students will be enrolled in Senior School for three years under the Competency Based Curriculum by the Ministry of Education in 2026.
In a Wednesday appearance before senators, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu assured them that the State is prepared to smoothly transition students from 8–4–4 to Grade 10 as it phases out the program.
“I would like to give assurance that all the necessary preparations for Senior School which will commence from January 2026 are in top gear,” the Chief of Staff stated.
According to Machogu, an assessment was carried out taking into account the number of secondary schools that are available and the ministry was able to look at the element of infrastructural development in terms of classrooms and laboratories.
The CS stated that all of the needs of the projected first cohort of Grade 10 students will be met by the resources that are now available.
Regarding human capital, Machogu stated that the ministry has increased teacher recruitment since 2022.
“Up to now, we have been able to recruit 56,750 teachers right from Primary school, JSS and Senior School,” he stated.
Machogu informed the senators that the ministry has been retooling the tutors to make sure the teachers are prepared to manage CBC.
He added that the curriculum that will direct students in Grade 10 has been developed by the KICD.
Senate Committee on Education Chairperson Joseph Nyutu inquired as to whether all Senior Schools will provide all three courses or if each school would just provide particular professional paths for students.
Machogu affirmed that Grade 10 will offer three options.
“The three are Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences commonly known as humanities and the final one is performing arts, music and athletics,” stated the secretary of state.
Machogu clarified that the three pathways are there to facilitate specialization.
“Our goal is to develop talent. Not everyone possesses talent in the humanities or sciences, while certain people excel in the arts. When a student is shown to be proficient in a certain subject, we want to support them,” Machogu stated.
Machogu stated that the ministry is still formulating a plan about whether or not the schools will offer all three pathways or specialize.
He noted that a sessional document on the topic has been developed by the Ministry and would be considered in parliament.
There may be fields in where STEM is the only subject. There may be some places where the school offers both STEM and humanities, but I don’t want to jump ahead to that discussion since I know the sessional document will provide guidance once it is considered in parliament.”
