How to Apply for government university funding model on the application portal.
According to official announcements by the government, new students enrolling in technical and vocational schools (TVET) and universities as of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, will be able to use the portal to apply for loans and scholarships.
In a statement issued on Monday, Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu stated that the portal will be opened by the government following the Eid Al Adha celebrations.
According to the statement, the gateway was originally supposed to open on June 15, but it was moved up because Monday was proclaimed a national holiday.
The statement stated, among other things, that on June 7, 2024, the Ministry of Education had announced that on June 15, 2024, the application portal for loans and scholarships under the Student-Centred Funding Model would open for TVET and university institutions serving the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort.
The CS continued by saying that in order to give Kenyans enough time to prepare for the celebration, the ministry moved up the date.
Machogu stated, “The Ministry of Education decided to move the portal opening date from Saturday, June 15th, 2024 to Tuesday, June 18th, 2024 in solidarity with our Muslim fraternity.” This will provide Kenyans ample time to prepare for and celebrate Eid Al-Adha).
Conversely, as per the recently implemented legislation, students will soon have access to the website where they can make requests for government financing under the new university funding model.
By going to the Higher Education Fund website at www.hef.co.ke, students can submit applications for loans and scholarships.
Additionally, the government stated that the portal would be operational for a significant duration to allow applicants adequate time.
The duration of the portal’s accessibility, however, was not stated.
The new funding model will allocate financial help and scholarships to university students based on the cost of their program of study.
Second, it is expected that the funding method will prioritize a student’s financial need based on their family history.
Once confirmed to have met the requirements, one will be needed to visit https://www.hef.co.ke/ for application with a checklist meeting the requirements hereunder;
A valid email address, a valid phone number registered to the applicant’s name, KCPE and KCSE index numbers and year of examination, College/University admission letter and a copy of the sponsorship letter for those sponsored in secondary school.
Others are the applicant’s parent/guardian’s registered numbers, the applicant’s ID number, death certificate if parents are deceased, a passport photo and a birth certificate.
Also, those who will be seeking loans will be needed to have the ID numbers and telephone numbers for two guarantors.
On the platform, one will first register/log in, fill out their profile and upload their documents, tick the box to apply for a scholarship or a loan and submit the application.
The applicant will then wait for the award within 30 days and then wait for an SMS payment notification.
It is also worth noting that students in private universities are not eligible for the government scholarship fund, but can apply for loans through HELB.
Continuing students will not be affected by the funding model and will continue to receive their funding based on the previous funding model.
