Japan provides AI and IT interns from Kenya with opportunities.
Applications from Kenyan students enrolled in AI and IT courses are being accepted by Japan.
Applications for the in-person internship for IT engineers will be accepted starting on May 1 and closing on June 20.
For AI engineers, the application deadline is June 30.
One section of a post requesting applications from the Japanese Embassy in Kenya states, “Exclusive opportunity for AI/tech students to come to Japan and participate in a Japanese tech company internship.”
As per the internship program schedule, candidates will compete in a coding challenge on June 22 and 23, and interviews will take place in July.
Following the coding competition, top-scoring competitors will have their applications matched with potential employers, and the internship provider will be chosen by the end of July.
The internship will run for one month following intake, from August to December.

The goal of the AI and tech student internships in Japan program is to encourage diversity in the hiring of IT expertise by Japanese and Japanese-affiliated businesses.
According to the program’s organizers, “interns from developing countries can also learn about various technologies, overseas business strategies, and specialized skills.”
Candidates must be proficient in both English and Japanese and have experience with technical IT/AI skills.
They have to be Kenyan citizens as well.
The program office will extend support, including assistance with internship activities, to those who are selected as successful applicants.
Along with flying tickets and lodging, the office will also provide assistance with the entrance visa formalities needed to participate in the internship.
In addition, it will manage registration, candidate matching and selection, as well as cross-cultural communication training and lectures.
Throughout the internship, host companies and the interns assigned to them will also get assistance.
Each company will select one to five candidates.
Part of the application requirements states, “Applicants must be able to fully commit to internships and training at companies and be available for activities scheduled according to the activity plan submitted to the administration office.”
