The Teachers Service Commission presented Members of Parliament with a larger funding request in May of this year to cover the costs of employing all 46,000 interns.
The Commission estimated that starting on July 1, 2024, the entire cost of hiring all 46,000 interns for full-time jobs would come to Sh30 billion, with government funds covering the majority of this amount.
TSC announced in January 2025 that it intended to hire 26,000 intern educators on a permanent basis.
Legislators were warned by educational institutions that it will cost Sh8.3 billion to certify 26,000 instructors for permanent posts.
In an effort to obtain permanent posts with retirement benefits, 46,000 educators who were hired as contract interns have staged protests across the country since the start of the second year.

Following the May 13 protests, the commission sent out warning letters in an apparent attempt to get the interns back to work.
On May 22, TSC decided to fire a few of the protesting interns after they received show-cause letters.

According to the Commission, 10,348 people who missed work altogether beginning on May 13, 2024, were given show-cause letters to explain their absence.
Only 9,606 intern teachers were able to reply to these letters within the allotted two weeks, out of 10,348 receivers, according to the TSC.
The TSC terminated the contracts of 742 interns in response to the demonstrations.According to TSC, 742 teachers’ contracts were terminated and replacements were ordered for those who failed to report for duty or reveal their location.
When the 46,000 interns are divided among the 742 teachers, 1.6% of the total is represented.
