JSS teachers end strike following agreement with TSC.
The three-week strike by junior secondary school teachers has ended with their signature on a return to work formula.
The JSS teachers had given up in order to demand pensions and long-term work.
Kuppet stated that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will hire the teachers permanently in the upcoming fiscal year as a result of the arrangement.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) mediated the ceasefire, and on Monday, June 3, lessons will resume.
In his capacity as a mediator, Kuppen Secretary General Akello Misori said that all show-cause letters sent to the striking teachers would be withdrawn by both the union and their employer.
According to the union, JSS teachers were unable to “bargain collectively” since they lacked a union.
“Punishing teachers for taking part in legitimate industrial action would be counterproductive to stability in the sector,” Misori stated.
Kuppet is going to “lobby Parliament for the allocation of Sh8.3 billion for the conversion of 26,000 trainee teachers to permanent and pensionable terms in July this year” , added Misori.
“The Sh8.3 billion should cater for all intern teachers hired in January 2023.”
Furthermore, the union insisted that the Sh4.68 billion set aside for new hires be applied “strictly” to permanent and pensionable positions, and that additional monies be set aside to transform the September 2023 hiring class into a permanent workforce.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kuppet, the two major teachers’ unions, have been engaged in a silent war to entice JSS instructors to join their organizations and grow their membership.
In addition to members’ monthly dues, the 39,550 instructors assigned to JSS would increase any union’s membership.
