KNUT calls for the swift restoration of schools that have not yet reopened.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has demanded that schools that have not yet reopened for classes to restart be renovated as soon as possible.
Secretary General Collins Oyuu stated that students would suffer if schools were closed indefinitely, which is why immediate action is required.
Speaking in Kericho, Oyuu stated that even though schools resumed on Monday, certain establishments remain unsafe for educational purposes.
“Over 1,600 schools have not reopened, and the schools are struggling. We want the issues that schools face—such as damaged infrastructure and abandoned schools—to be resolved,” he declared.
He acknowledged that parents had expressed concerns about why certain schools are still closed, but he insisted that student safety came first.
Legislators from the impacted areas were tasked by Oyuu with using money from the National Government Constituency Development Fund for the rehabilitation.
“Aside from the CDF funding, I believe we should go above and above and even invite well-wishers to step up and lend a hand.
The Ministry of Education’s infrastructure funds have been put to good use. “I want Education CS to use the same funds to ensure that these institutions are repaired,” Oyuu continued.
The Union expressed its approval of the schools’ reopening and instructed the Ministry to allocate infrastructural money for the renovation, stating that no child should be denied an education of any kind.
