KNUT Wants To Partner With TSC To Recruit Teachers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has received an appeal from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) asking it to collaborate with the union in the hiring and recruiting of new teachers.
Collins Oyuu, the secretary general of KNUT, stated that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the union must work together to find and hire new teachers.
Oyuu emphasized the value of trade unions and the TSC working together to find the teachers needed for the nation’s changing educational system.
“We have to all agree that we have to walk side by side. “To achieve the teachers we need for the education we want, trade unions and TSC, the employer, should work together,” stated Oyuu on Thursday at the World Teachers Day ceremony in Nairobi.
Oyuu also underlined the importance of fully attending to teachers’ needs in order to empower them to give students an excellent education.
“A well-cared-for teacher is the one who will lead to the quality education that we desire,” he said.
In order to address the issue of teacher shortages, Benta Opande, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA), emphasized that all teachers nationwide must improve their abilities in digital learning and teaching.
“We are pushing our educators to improve their proficiency with digital teaching and learning. We won’t be lamenting the teacher shortage when we have educators who can instruct students using electronic devices like laptops, she added. “A teacher can instruct 300 students in an hour,” she said.
In order to support teachers in developing their abilities, Opande further disclosed that KEWOTA is dedicated to collaborating with other trade unions.
In reference to the current discourse surrounding educational reforms, Opande underscored the necessity of preserving the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to uphold its autonomy as delineated in the constitution.
The TSC rejected numerous recommendations made by the Prof. Raphael Munavu-led Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, claiming that if they were carried out, some of the recommendations would violate the commission’s constitutional mandate and jeopardize its independence.
The Working Party had suggested that the Ministry of Education take over duties now handled by the TSC, including teacher transfers, discipline, retraining, promotion, and recruiting.
