KUCCPS: Nearly twice as many students applied to private universities.
For admission to private colleges, a total of 18,557 candidates submitted applications to the Kenya colleges and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
Compared to the previous year, when 9,622 students applied for spots at the institutes, this was nearly twice as many.
Private institutions obtained a 32 percent placement rate and a cumulative declared capacity of 57,322 openings, according to data issued by the KUCCPS yesterday.
Students have the option of attending public or private colleges under the new funding model for higher education that was unveiled last year. Placement is often determined by merit and choice.
Private university attendees, however, are not eligible for government scholarships but are still able to apply for student loans.
Mount Kenya University had the most students (3,226) in the category of private universities. The university stated that 6,103 was its maximum capacity. In addition to accepting students directly, private universities may also place students through the KUCCPS.
KCA University (2,074), Zetech University (1,703), Kabarak University (1,653), and Catholic University of East Africa (1,218) were among the other private universities with sizable enrollments.
Despite claiming to have a 300-student capacity, the International Leadership University only placed one student. Despite declaring a 750-student capacity, the Management University of Africa only accepted 12 students.
