KUCCPS Portal to Open for Inter-University Transfers Across Universities.
Students will be able to move between universities and change courses of their choosing when the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) opens its site tomorrow, June 5. Regarding university placements and related fees, this development occurs in the midst of intense legislative scrutiny and controversy.
Opiyo Wandayi, the minority leader in the National Assembly, has disclosed that the Standing Committee on Education has demanded that all appointments for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 class be revoked. Allegations of irregularities in the fees needed for different courses are the reason for this decision.
“I am aware that the education committee of this house has previously issued some statements or orders that the Minister of Education withdraws all university admissions due to inconsistencies or discrepancies in the fees that students are expected to pay for different courses,” Wandayi said on Tuesday during a National Assembly meeting.
Citing irregularities in the mandatory fees that students must pay, the Committee on Education recommended that the Ministry of Education cancel all university admissions.
CEO of KUCCPS Mercy Wahome announced the portal’s launch date and stated that the organization’s goal is to streamline students’ transfers to the institutions and courses of their choice.
May saw the release of the placement results for students who took the KCSE in 2023 at university and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
Nevertheless, the placement has come under fire and investigation after claims surfaced that some students are being forced to enroll in classes they never wanted to take, while others are being assigned to institutions they cannot afford.
Numerous complaints from parents and students led to the request for an investigation into purported anomalies in fees and student placements.
According to reports, under the new funding model implemented last year, families and students were being pressured to select university courses based more on affordability than on qualifications and goals.
As the first students to use this model, first-years have already accrued significant fee balances that will likely rise as they continue. Many parents and students have indicated that they plan to register for inter-university transfers as soon as the KUCCPS system opens, with the second cohort scheduled to enroll in institutions in August and September.
Wahome did, however, guarantee that the procedure would go well during the results releases in May, stating that all transfers would be finished by July to allow students to report to their respective colleges in August.
She emphasized how crucial it is to submit your Higher Education Loan application by the deadline for reporting.
“Funding for education will be awarded to 153,000 qualifying students, or 76% of the total. All pupils should be situated in their schools by August, thanks to our smooth process, according to Wahome.
KUCCPS states that the Placement Policy and Processing Procedure, which emphasizes applicants’ preferences, qualifications, and authorized capacities, control the placement process.
In an effort to get more information, Wandayi requested that the Julius Melly (Tinderet) chaired Education Committee make a statement as soon as possible.
“The state of affairs obviously paints a picture of serious confusion in the universities and colleges sector,” said Wandayi, adding, “It is a matter that requires immediate clarification for this issue to be addressed immediately.”
Public institutions have accepted 134,743 candidates so far this year. All of the 47,872 kids who were eligible to enter universities in 2023 based on their KCSE mean grade of C+ did not select a degree program. 35,881 qualifiers are still unaccounted for, and 11,991 of them choose to enroll in diploma programs.
A total of 899,453 applicants took the KCSE Examination in 2023.
