KUPPET Brings Up Mental Health Issues with Teachers.
The South Rift Region’s teachers are experiencing an increasing number of mental health problems, which the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has linked mostly to gambling. According to KUPPET officials, this has resulted in a rise in suicides and hospitalizations for depression.
During a recent speech in Kericho town, Mary Rotich, the Executive Secretary of KUPPET’s Kericho Branch, voiced her profound worry over the tragic happenings.
According to Rotich, the growing tendency of gambling among educators has had disastrous effects, including a decline in mental health and fatalities within the teaching profession.
In our county, more than four tutors have taken their own lives, and several more are in the hospital owing to despair. This is concerning, and we need to act quickly,” Rotich said, emphasizing how serious the situation was.
Given the critical role that educators play in influencing the lives of young students, the mental health crisis is not only having an impact on the people affected but also presents a serious threat to the larger community. In his remarks, Rotich emphasized the need of community support and watchfulness, calling on coworkers and neighbors to be alert for indicators of teacher distress and to act quickly to provide the required help.
Our duty is to look out for one another. People exhibiting depressive symptoms require immediate assistance,” she stressed.
The KUPPET representative demanded that the crisis’s underlying causes be addressed right away. In order to help teachers deal with the pressures that lead to gambling and consequent mental health difficulties, Rotich recommended that extensive support systems be built. These systems should include money management instruction and mental health therapy.
Education stakeholders, legislators, and the general public are reminded by the concerning circumstances in the South Rift Region to give mental health first priority and establish a nurturing atmosphere for educators. For the education system to remain stable and successful, and consequently for the future of the country, educator well-being is essential.
As KUPPET keeps up its advocacy for teachers’ mental health, it is hoped that their call to action will result in concrete improvements that will protect teachers’ mental health and, in turn, the region’s educational standards.
