KUPPET calls for branch meetings after TSC halts burial funds deductions.
A meeting with teachers has been requested by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in response to the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to stop deducting money from burial benevolent funds (BBF).
TSC informed Kuppet in a letter dated May 21 that the commission was stopping the BBF deductions.
In a letter dated May 24, Kuppet Secretary General Akelo Misori requested all branch Executive Secretaries to call a meeting to restate the union’s resolution to withhold the payments.
“We hereby seek information from each branch reaffirming the union’s authority to maintain the BBF contributions by Kuppet members,” Misori stated.
Misori pointed out that on April 3, 2021, the Annual Delegates Conference approved the Kuppet BBF deductions.
“The purpose of this communication is to instruct you to convene an urgent meeting of the Branch Governing Council to deliberate on the issue and inform this office of your resolutions,” the letter begins.
According to Misori, the union’s main office has received multiple complaints from chapters that had ongoing programs dependent on BBF contributions after the TSC’s decision.
He mentioned that a court lawsuit filed by several Kuppet branch executives contesting the legitimacy of the union’s BBF contributions prompted the TSC circular to stop the withdrawals.
“The union has entered a defense against the petition,” Misori stated.
TSC said that they stopped the deductions in response to a legal challenge filed by five Kuppet branch officers challenging the legality of the practice.
“The Petition challenges the legality of the Kuppet Social Welfare/BBF deductions, as exhibited by Jentrix Ogola’s payslip, and enjoins the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the TSC for the deductions,” the TSC stated.
“In light of the desire by the union through the said officials, the commission will stop forthwith all deductions of Kuppet BBF made pursuant to your letter referenced above.”
