Kuppet officials: Confirm all 46,000 JSS teachers, not just 26,000.
As the Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers’ strike reached its second week, more than 200 interns from Narok county protested on Tuesday, demanding permanent and pensionable contracts from their employer TSC.
The JSS interns held a peaceful demonstration at Emurua Dukirr Trading Centre in Transmara East subcounty.
They also claimed compensation for the time they had worked without pay as interns since starting work.
The protests were spearheaded by Kuppet officials.
The authorities indicated they will not accept Parliamentary Education Committee chairman Julius Melly’s statement that only 26,000 JSS interns will be considered for the first phase of permanent positions.
The union leaders, brandishing banners and twigs, stormed the local TSC Sub-County Directors’ offices and presented their petition on behalf of the teachers.
“We want all 46,000 JSS interns to be confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms, and they should be compensated for the time they spent working,” said Charles Ngeno, Kuppet Executive Secretary, Narok branch.
He urged the president and the TSC committee to consider compensating the intern instructors so they may return to class.
The unionist went on to say that the majority of JSS interns are despondent as a result of their low pay, and they are joining the interns to fight for their rights.
“Sh17,000 paid to the teachers is not enough,” he stated.
Ngeno threatened to continue the protests, warning that they could become a daily event until their issues are addressed.
“We will soon increase the number of days on the streets until TSC hears their demands because it seems the teachers’ employer will only listen when learning stops and that is the direction we are being forced to take,” Ngeno stated.
“The Parliament should use the budget-making process that is currently ongoing to appropriate funds for confirmation and compensation of teachers and we will not accept confirmation of only 26,000 but all the 46,000 should be confirmed once,” he stated.
Another official, Siele Towett, noted that if the government wants the CBC education system to function properly, it must address all of the interns’ demands.
“The majority of these CBC teachers are underpaid and depressed. The government should confirm them for permanent positions to guarantee that the CBC functions properly,” Towett added.
Trans Mara East Sub-County TSC Director Peter Mwangi, who received the petition, urged the teachers to be patient while the government worked on their request.
He stated that the government had heard their demands and will respond at the appropriate moment.
