KUPPET protests the Teachers’ Pension Plan’s delayed appointment of trustees.
The Teachers’ Pension Scheme Trustees’ delayed appointment has been criticized by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
Speaking at a conference in Nairobi on Sunday, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori urged Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u to gazette the nominations for the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS).
In order to protect pensioners’ monies, KUPPET “urges the CS Njuguna Ndung’u to immediately discharge his legal responsibility by gazetting the PSSS nominees,” he said.
Misori stated that as the funds of retirees were in danger of being depleted, immediate action was required.
“Billions of shillings of pensioners’ hard-earned money are at risk because the funds CEO and staff have been left to make decisions that fall under board leadership,” he said.
KUPPET pointed out that even though the union provided CS Ndung’u a list of its choices in January as required by law, it has not had representatives on the Board of Trustees for three months.
Misori went on to voice worries about the absence of payment for educators who pass away due to a lack of life group insurance.
“There are teachers who are dying and not being taken care of just because of this delay, so this delay is very serious because teachers don’t have a group life cover,” he said.
Before the union’s impending Annual General Meeting later in April, where the newly elected board will address audit issues from the previous financial year, KUPPET asked that the PSSS trustees be gazetted.
