Ministry of Education issues a new directive to schools ahead of reopening.
The longer April holiday brought on by the floods won’t be extended, according to the Ministry of Education.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang advised schools to develop a strategy to guarantee syllabus coverage within the allotted period as per the year’s school calendar in a circular to school heads.
In case the continuous, intense rains around the country have an impact on education, the institutions were also advised to modify the hours of instruction.
However, in terms of school transportation, they will have to stick to the 6 am to 6 pm schedule.
The administration will think about extending the second term for an ambiguous amount of time to make up for lost time, as revealed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu a few days prior to the decision.
We will look for ways to make up lost time, especially for Form Four candidates, by extending [the second term] by a few days. According to Machogu, “we might minimize the number of days schools will be closed. They were expected to close for three weeks in August.”
Due to excessive rain and catastrophic floods that have claimed at least 257 lives, the administration decided to postpone the reopening of schools for the second term, which was scheduled for April 29.
The 2024 school calendar states that Term 2 will run for 14 weeks, from April 29 to August 2, with a half-term break scheduled for June 20–23.
August 5 is when the August holiday is scheduled to start and end. After that, on August 26, 2024, learners will continue for a third session that runs until October 25, 2024. The extended weekend is scheduled to start on October 28, 2024, and end on January 3, 2025.
Exams for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) are scheduled to take place over the course of four days, from October 28 to October 31.
In contrast, the KCSE exam will take place over three weeks, from November 4 to November 22.
“The exam schedule is unchanged; starting in November, KCSE and KPSEA will be administered at the regular time,” Machogu stated.
