Ministry Officials Visit to Assess Preparedness for Reopening of Schools.
Leading Ministry representatives will start traveling the nation to evaluate the degree of damage and readiness for the reopening of schools.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, will accompany his officers to areas hit by flooding.
On May 3, 2024, CS Machogu sent a circular to the Regional, County, and Sub-County Directors of Education, pleading with them to put the security and welfare of the students, faculty, and school community first.
He asked schools to provide information on how many children missed class because of transportation problems, how much the weather affected their families financially, and how many pupils were domestically displaced.
Additionally, the CS recommended principals, head teachers, and school boards of management (BoM) to avoid putting teachers and pupils in potentially fatal situations.
The weatherman says the rain will stop in the next few days, therefore Monday of next week will see the return of the schools.
When he announced the news yesterday at the State House, President William Ruto stated that all schools would resume on May 13.
The news was made just a few days after the state governor announced an indefinite delay in the reopening, citing meteorological predictions that the flooding situation would probably deteriorate as a result of the ongoing rain.
He also referenced a cyclone that was predicted to hit Kenya’s coast with enormous, lethal waves, powerful winds, and pouring rain.
240 Deaths
Since then, the weatherman has declared that the threat of a cyclone has passed.
In addition to killing over 240 people, the devastating floods destroyed infrastructure, buildings, and agriculture.
Friday was proclaimed a public holiday by President Ruto in remembrance of those impacted by the flooding.
On Friday, Ruto declared that he will begin a large tree-planting initiative to restore and maintain the environment and begin mitigating the consequences of climate change.
He said, “On this day, we will plant trees and remind ourselves that taking care of our environment is the solution to climate change.”
