Ministry requests that 740 JSS teachers be fired.
According to Education Principle Secretary Belio Kipsang, the Ministry of Education has requested a reconsideration of the dismissal of 742 junior secondary school tutors.
The PS classified the situation as a labor issue, stating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the employer of the teachers, and the Labour Ministry will handle it.
While in Nakuru, he stated, “I think there is a labor dispute and all such matters have their ways of being dealt with.”
“Even this one will be handled within the structure that we use to handle labor-related issues.”
A petition to reinstate the fired teachers has already been filed with the TSC by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet).
Simultaneously, the union has sent a formal letter to the commission requesting that the tutors be reinstated within 14 days or threatening to pursue other legal options.
Despite the fact that the teachers are not union members, Kuppet Deputy Secretary-General Moses Nthurima stated that Kuppet would represent them in court for the “public interest.”
10,348 JSS instructors received “show cause” letters from TSC, with a 14-day deadline for their responses and return to work.
Of the 9,606 teachers who returned to work, 742 had their contracts canceled.
There are 46,000 instructors on contracts overall.
The government’s announcement that they would be given permanent employment caused the JSS leadership to call off their strike.
When classes resumed for the second semester last month, the JSS teachers went on strike.
Fresh Classrooms
By January of next year, the ministry will build 16,000 classrooms, according to Dr. Kipsang.
“I want to reassure parents that public schools will provide a safe environment for their children and that all necessary facilities, including desks and classrooms, will be ready by January of next year,” stated the PS.
Nakuru County would receive a portion of the 16,000 lessons, or 766 classes, at a cost to the taxpayers of Sh70 million.
The PS justified tax increases on behalf of the government, stating that this was “the only way” Kenyans would profit and receive better services.
We are aware that it hurts, but we must go through it in order to appreciate. In order to build schools and give our kids better facilities, this nation needs money,” he continued.
