MPs urge the recall of university admissions letters.
Parliamentarians are requesting that the government retract the admissions letters that were sent to university applicants, citing issues with the cost schedule.
In a meeting with representatives from KUCCPS, HELB, and Higher Education PS Beatrice Muganda, the Committee on Education contended that the fee structure omitted information on government capitation and expected parental contributions.
Instead of using a single amount for all costs, the legislators want the charge structure changed to categorize each one.
This comes after Beatrice Muganda, the principal secretary for higher education, was questioned by the National Assembly Education Committee over the new university funding scheme, which they claim is impractical.
Charles Ringera, the CEO of the Higher Education Loans Board, revealed that the organization has implemented an allocation criterion that is based on a formula that considers the financial circumstances of each student.
Students from families earning less than Ksh 6,000 would receive 95% of government finance under the new financing model, while students from households earning more than Ksh 120,000 will only receive 60% of government support.
The parliamentarians are requesting that the Ministry reevaluate the former funding model, which based funding on the type of course and the number of undergraduate students enrolled in the regular program.
