Nacada mandates the removal of alcohol billboards near schools.
The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has ordered the dismantling of billboards advertising alcoholic beverages near educational facilities.
In a statement, Nacada condemned the rising advertising of alcoholic beverages and alcohol usage via billboards placed near educational institutions around the country, which is a clear violation of the law.
“This is observed to be happening, despite the fact that the law prohibits marketing that are misleading or deceptive, or that are likely to give an incorrect impression regarding the qualities, health impacts, health hazards, or social implications of alcoholic beverages. Nacada CEO Anthony Omweikwa stated.
“Exposure to outdoor alcohol advertising around schools is associated with youth intentions to use alcohol noting that the current age of initiation to alcohol use in the country is seven years” he said.
As a result, the agency has pledged to enforce regulations to ensure safe educational environments that promote learning and personal growth.
The effort would involve all relevant national and county government authorities.
“In line with the Alcoholic Drinks Promotion Regulations, NACADA is under the relevant provisions of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2010 coordinating with relevant stakeholders in the country to enforce measures that will remove all the billboards near learning institutions” Omweika said.
He noted that the appearance of billboards hinders their attempts to combat the vice by normalizing alcohol usage and promoting it as a desirable and attractive option.
At the same time, he urged marketing agencies and businesses to take social responsibility.
“By doing so, companies may assist shield young people from the detrimental effects of alcohol marketing and encourage their route to healthy and productive lives. “Free of any influences that may contribute to harmful behaviour,” he stated.
