Nairobi’s Dishi Na County Initiative Will Reach Over 200,000 Students.
After schools reopen on Monday, more than 200,000 students in Nairobi will get meals through the Dishi na County Initiative. City Hall anticipates a rise in demand due to the effects of floods on households.
According to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, the county government has added 20,000 more meals to the initiative’s assistance. Only 180,000 meals were served daily by the county during the First Term.
Speaking during President William Ruto’s formal opening of Lenana School Primary, Sakaja reaffirmed the initiative’s continuation.
Food For Education, a key partner of the county-run program, agreed with the governor’s views.
According to Vincent Muiruri, the program has to be improved because it has acted as a catalyst for higher student enrollment and retention in public elementary schools.
“We had about 184,000 students last term; we anticipate having more this term. Nevertheless, we have made enough arrangements to ensure that they have meals,” Muiruri observed.
Twelve cooking areas
Under the Dishi na County project, over 1,586 individuals make meals and deliver them to various schools before 11:30 a.m. in twelve kitchens that are thoughtfully positioned throughout Nairobi.
“Meal preparation begins the day before, and after the food is cooked overnight, transportation to the various schools begins before 10:00am.”
The voluntary group sources food for cooking from various regions of the nation, thereby providing farmers with financial empowerment.
Muiruti reaffirmed, “We get rice from Mwea, beans from central, and ndengu (green grams) from West Kenya.”
In 2023, Dishi na County was inaugurated with a groundbreaking ceremony for 10 kitchens located throughout the county. On August 28, the first supper was served.
The program’s second phase, which increased the number of students getting school meals from 80,000 to 184,000, was introduced in January 2024.
Mombasa County and Murang’a are served by Nairobi’s project partner, Food For Education.
