Nakuru JSS teachers demand permanent jobs by taking down their equipment.
Teachers at Nakuru’s junior secondary schools have sworn they won’t return to work unless their demands are fulfilled.
The JSS teachers protested along Kenyatta Avenue on Monday, urging the government to change their contract to one that is permanent and pensionable.
Stanley Metobo, the chair of the teachers’ union, stated that they will not move when classes resume for the second semester.
Metobo declared, “We have put down our tools and we are not returning to school because of government efforts to not take JSS matters seriously.”
He expressed regret that, despite fulfilling the government’s one-year internship requirement, his contract was prolonged rather than being changed to permanent and pensionable conditions.
Metobo urged the government to follow through on its promise to put teachers’ welfare first.
He deemed the contract invalid and stated that JSS teachers should be paid for the time they have worked.
Fazul Mwangi demanded that the government abide by court rulings declaring that the internship was illegal.
MPs, according to Mwangi, abused their position of authority by providing employment letters to their friends, which made it harder for them to get a job.
“Unfortunately, the MPs are the ones giving out employment letters, which has led to discrimination and nepotism that has disadvantaged those who are not privileged,” the speaker stated.
He pointed out that because of the high cost of living, their monthly pay of Sh17,000 was insufficient to meet their demands.
Using their resources to earn a degree, Cecilia Wangechi said the government had abused and failed them.
She argued, “The government has failed us; they called us painters and cleaners, but we are teachers with training, credentials, and licenses—we should be respected.”
Wangechi declared that it has been pointless to try to obtain employment letters.
She implored the Teachers Service Commission to resist allowing politicians to trample on their authority because they had exploited their weaknesses.
