New school opening date announced by the government.
After two delays due to the flooding that has devastated the nation since last month, all schools will reopen for the second semester on Monday.
In making the statement on Wednesday, President William Ruto stated that he is depending on the advice of the Kenya Meteorological Department, which has forecast favorable circumstances starting the following week.
The president declared, “And therefore, all schools will be opened on Monday next week and parents must prepare their children to go to school.” “All parents are advised on the assessment of the weathermen and the government of Kenya it will now be safe and we have made adequate arrangements,” the president said.
The statement was made by the president in a meeting with the leaders of Laikipa and Kajiado.
The president said that the Constituency Development Fund will be used by the government to provide funding for damaged school infrastructure.
Over 200,000 people have lost their lives and over 200,000 have been evacuated from 42,000 dwellings due to flash floods since March, primarily in Nairobi. Almost fifty people lost their lives in the Mai Mahiu flood catastrophe last week alone, making it one of the worst-hit places.
Slum regions like Mukuru and Mathare in Nairobi’s capital, which are located on unstable terrain along river valleys, saw houses washed away, leaving hundreds of people without a place to live and over thirty people dead.
Along with sporadic thunderstorms, meteorologists have predicted near-average to above-average rainfall across the country in May. Coastal areas like Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and portions of Tana River are bracing for severe downpours.
