PS Inyangala placed 134,706 pupils in public universities.
In the 2024–25 placement cycle, 134,706 applicants were placed in various public colleges, according to Higher Education and Research PS Beatrice Inyangla.
Additionally, Inyangala disclosed in a report to the Departmental Committee on Education that 18,557 applications were assigned to private universities within the same time frame.
She mentioned that there are 220,434 placements available at all 39 public universities and 57,322 placements at all 30 private universities.
The PS added that placement is determined by both student choice and merit.
“14, 564 students applied for medicine, the most expensive academic program, during the current placement cycle,” she said.
According to her, 689 pupils could be accommodated, and 656 of those who met the requirements were assigned to their first choice.
She clarified, “An additional 30 students were placed based on their second choice, 22 based on their third choice, seven based on their fourth choice, and 59 based on affirmative action.”
The PS mentioned that the eight months were dedicated to developing the new funding model (NFM), which will be implemented gradually starting with KCSE 2022.
She informed the committee that “it will be implemented over a period of four to six years with monitoring, evaluation, accountability, results, and lesson learning.”
Inyangala went on to say that real data gathered from the field was the basis for the NFM’s conception and testing.
“It adhered to the best practices for modeling the life cycle,” she stated.
According to Inyangala, the study was based on a historical review of funding for postsecondary education in Kenya under World Bank Development Policy Operations 3 and 4.
On May 3, 2023, President William Ruto introduced the New Funding Model (NFM).
In the Financial Year 2023–24, the NFM will be implemented by the Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB), Universities Fund, Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), and universities under the State Department for Higher Education and Research.
