Sakaja reimburses stranded pupils for their travel if the school’s reopening is postponed.
Governor Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi has made the decision to cover the bus expenses for the pupils who are presently stuck in the city.
The Governor is seen talking with students at the Central Business District and directing some of them to the automobiles in a video that he uploaded on his X account.
Sakaja said that his teams are organizing transportation for kids in uniform as they head back home at different bus stops.
“Following the postponement of School Opening Dates and the fact that many parents had already released their children to report to school this morning, we have organized the payment of return fare for the stranded students,” he stated.
After the government, acting through the Ministry of Education, announced early on Monday that the reopening of schools would be delayed, the students and pupils found themselves stranded.
Education Chief Ezekiel Machogu had originally planned for the second term to commence on Monday, April 29, but he decided to push it out to May 6.
He explained that the decision to delay the reopening was made because bringing staff and kids to the impacted institutions would endanger their lives.
“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities,” Machogu stated.
“Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024.”
Sakaja had already pledged to help with the students’ transportation, pointing out that the ministry’s early morning communications had caused them inconvenience.
“I’ve come across a few pictures of some students who seem to be stuck. I will therefore go pay for their bus fare when I get out of here so they can go home. In addition, I’ll buy them Pepsi so they can eat,” he declared while appearing on Radio Citizen.
