School Opening Dates for Institutions Affected by the Floods Extended.
The national government declared on Friday, April 26 that school starting date extensions will be granted on a case-by-case basis.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that the Ministry of Education would work with different county administrations to analyze the situation on the ground before informing parents and children of the adjustments during a press conference on the continuing floods in Karen.
Additionally, he insisted that students whose schools have not been impacted by the rain should report to class on time, as set by the administration.
It will be evaluated on its own merits, case by case. If an extension of the opening day is required, we can make it happen. If not, the school will open as scheduled for the benefit of the nation,” he said.
Belio Kipsang, the principal secretary for education, announced that the Ministry has started analyzing the Nairobi County issue.
In particular, he made hints that the demolition of classrooms and restrooms would force 64 schools in Nairobi County to reschedule their opening dates.
However, he also insisted that for the institutions that have not been impacted, the dates of the start of classes would not change.
“There are 64 schools in Nairobi County that are significantly impacted in terms of classrooms and restrooms. In Nairobi, we have chosen to address them as local problems rather than requesting that all schools close.
“This is a result of the 800 private schools and 210 public schools in Nairobi. We may postpone the 64’s opening,” he said.
On Monday, April 29, the schools are supposed to return for the second term.
However, the Ministry of Transportation is in charge of restoring vital infrastructure that is utilized by pupils and school buses.
Bridges and roadways are among the infrastructure elements that have been demolished.
