SRC’s new rule regarding the retirement age for civil servants and teachers.
The Salaries and Remunerations Commission (SRC) has strongly opposed the idea to decrease the retirement age for teachers and civil personnel to 55 years.
Currently, public employees and teachers must retire at age sixty, while people with disabilities must retire at age sixty-five.
Parliament has been presented with a legislative proposal that would lower the statutory mandatory retirement age to 55 years old, in defiance of these principles.
Proponents of the new idea maintain that lowering the retirement age will give young people a chance to advance their careers in the military.
Nonetheless, SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich argues that the nation’s obligatory retirement age ought to stay at sixty years old.
According to Mengich, taxpayers would probably bear a larger share of the pension cost as a result of the retirement age being lowered.
This merely suggests that the number of pension recipients would increase.
Mengich urged individuals advocating for a lower retirement age to take into account the global trend that may be beneficial.
She also mentioned other nations that could serve as benchmarks because they do not have a retirement age.
Mengich pointed out that although though people in the nation become eligible for a pension at age 55 if they choose to retire at that age, they are still productive.
She went on to say that these individuals can make valuable contributions to the nation.
Mengich also stated that since these workers have vast expertise that benefits the Kenyan labor, it will not be reasonable to let them go at a very young age.
The Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill of 2023, in contrast, aims to lower the retirement age to 55 years of age.
Recall that the government changed the retirement age in 2009 from 55 to 60 years old.
For everyone living in the public sector who has varying talents, the government has extended the term by five years.
The government had been grappling with a massive pension debt as more individuals were retiring from service, which was the primary justification offered for the review during this time.
A bill to alter the current Act has been presented by Benjamin Gathiru, the MP for Embakasi Central.
No officer is anticipated to serve in an acting position for longer than six months, according to the proposal.
