Students are left stranded when schools are abruptly delayed to reopen.
Following the abrupt postponement of the schools’ reopening date to Monday, May 6, by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, hundreds of pupils have been left stranded across the nation.
Students in Kajiado County who had arrived at school for the second term found themselves trapped when they discovered that the administration had moved the date of the reopening by one week.
Parents from various parts of Kajiado who brought their children back to school on Monday morning had already spent a hefty sum of money.
Some had traveled on Sunday night in order to arrive to schools on time, only to find out about the recent development after they had already reached the establishments.
Parents complained that the Education Ministry’s delayed notification had caused them and their children discomfort.
While irate parents were forced to return home with their kids, unattended youngsters were left behind in bus parks.
David Obuhatsa, the chairman of the National Parents Association, voiced similar feelings on the uncertainty brought on by the last-minute decision to postpone the start of classes by one week.
Speaking over the phone with KBC, Obuhatsa backed the government’s decision but counseled the Ministry of Education to inform parents ahead of time to minimize any inconvenience.
The head of the Association excused the government by saying that floods are uncontrollable, just like any other tragedy.
In order to provide care for boarding school students who have reported up until the revised reporting date, he asked school managers to communicate with the education officers in their respective regions.
The governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, has agreed to cover the cost of the return bus journey for any students who become trapped in the county.
After some pupils had already reported to their individual schools around the nation, the government released a circular at one in the morning that extended the opening date to May 6, 2024.
