Teachers and Public Employees Will Get Higher Benefits
Teachers and civil servants are set to benefit from increased allowances, as announced during the June 2023 state budget presentation on June 15, 2023.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is reviewing the starting monthly salaries for the fiscal year 2022-2023, with new per diem allowance rates to be implemented for teachers and civil servants.
Salary and Allowance Adjustments
Key Highlights:
- Teachers employed by TSC will begin receiving their June 2023 wages and benefits, including arrears, starting next week.
- Priority is given to PTE teachers promoted to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), who will benefit from substantial salary increases.
- New JSS instructors, as per their deployment letters, will start in job group C2 with a gross monthly salary of 58,335 Kenyan Shillings.
- Teachers promoted under the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) will see their salaries adjusted accordingly.
Breakdown of Salary Adjustments
Junior Secondary School (JSS) Teachers:
- Promoted PTE teachers in JSS: Start in job group C2 with a gross monthly salary of 58,335 Kenyan Shillings.
- This group includes long-term employees, those on probation, and those with an option to resign.
Middle School Teachers:
- Over 35,000 middle school teachers are employed by TSC, with some hired on an internship basis and others on permanent, pensionable terms.
- Only half of these teachers have received additional salaries so far, with the rest expected to receive their compensation next week.
- Teachers promoted from job group B5 to C1 and from C1 to C2 will receive their salary increases.
General TSC Teacher Categories:
- By June 2023, the TSC instructor category will have their income restored.
- Employees in job groups B5, C1, and C2 who were not promoted will also receive their salaries.
Civil Servants Allowance Adjustments
- Civil servants will begin receiving their adjusted salaries starting next week, following the end of the fiscal year on June 15, 2023.
- The new salary adjustments are in line with the recommendations by the remuneration commission.
The increased allowances and salary adjustments reflect the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers and civil servants.
