Teachers’ new salary agreement in accordance with the most recent TSC agreement.
The new compensation agreement for teachers Teachers will now receive a new pay increase as a result of the agreement that was reached by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET).
The second part of the teachers’ pay increase will now be paid in July 2024.
New wage agreement for teachers
In accordance with the 2021–25 Collective Bargaining Agreement with the teachers’ employer TSC, the salary agreement was designed to protect instructors against upcoming statutory deductions and the rising cost of living.
The union secretary general presided over the above signing of the teachers salary increase agreement at the Kenya School of Government.
One of the two financial benefits of the deal is that the lowest-paid teachers will receive a basic pay review of up to 9.5 percent.
Additionally, it includes an additional 2.4 percent for the commission’s highest-paid instructor.
The teacher wage increase was retroactively applied to July 1, 2023, during the first phase.
House allowances for teachers employed in small towns and rural areas were examined in this pay agreement.
According to signed CBA, basic salary for instructors working at Teacher Grade C2, the entry level for graduate teachers, increased by up to Sh4,164 during the first phase.
However, those educators in C3 will receive a raise of Sh5,141.
Instructors in the top division (DS) received a raise of Sh4,883.
Akello Misori, the secretary general of KUPPET, vehemently objected to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission SRC’s ceiling for teachers receiving a C in the negotiations.
However, teachers in emergingtowns and rural areas also earn a raise in their home allowance of up to Sh2,100 per month for grade C2.
Additionally, grade D4 instructors received a total of Sh8,700 per month.
It is required to highlight that in determining dwelling allowances, these wage payments follow the merger of geographical Cluster 4 with those in Cluster 3.
Pay increase in the second phase
Teachers are getting closer to the second plahse, and KUPPET has pledged to keep negotiating for a complete harmonisation of dwelling allowances and rates for Nairobi City in order to increase commuter allowances.
A prominent demand for teachers’ unions during the negotiations, aside from the minimum wage increase of between 30 and 70 percent, was the full harmonization of house allowance.
Teachers employed by TSC on permanent and pensionable conditions will therefore start receiving their pay in June 2024.
