Teachers’ TSC Hardship Allowances by Job Group as of June 2024.
The Teachers employed under the Teachers Service Commission TSC receive monthly salaries along with various allowances, including a special hardship allowances.
This allowance is specifically granted to teachers working in difficult-to-staff areas, varying in amount based on job group and years of service.
It serves to support them in coping with the challenging and expensive conditions they face.
The teachers facing these hardships encounter numerous challenges such as inadequate water supply, recurrent flooding, harsh living conditions, and security threats from bandits.
The hardship allowance differs among teachers, with those in higher job groups and longer service receiving higher amounts compared to newly employed teachers.
Over time, efforts have been made to improve infrastructure nationwide, impacting the designation of hardship areas.
While some regions have been removed from the list of hardship areas due to improved social amenities, certain areas remain classified as hardship regions.
This is due to factors like drought, terrorism, and other vulnerabilities.
In the past, there was a proposal to standardize the hardship allowance for all teachers following a survey by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission in 2014.
However, this proposal was not implemented by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Currently, the highest hardship allowance is received by teachers in administrative roles such as chief principals in job group D5, which is amounting to 38,100 shillings monthly.
The designated hardship counties listed by TSC include the following ;
- Garissa
- Isiolo
- Kilifi
- Kwale
- Lamu
- Mandera
- Marsabit
- Narok
- Samburu
- Taita Taveta
- Tana River
