Teaching Qualifications for Kenyan Education Diploma and Degree Holders.
Teaching Requirements for Graduate and Diploma Holders. Kenya places a high value on teaching; the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) estimates that there are more than 300,000 teachers in the country. The TSC was created by the Kenyan Constitution as a separate body to manage human resources in the educational field.
Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Primary Education Teaching, and Diploma and Degree in Education are the three categories into which Kenyan teachers are divided. Each category has specific duties and educational requirements. The credentials of secondary school teachers are the main topic of this essay.
The TSC modified its requirements for secondary school teachers in 2024. These requirements are based on a variety of education degrees and certificates, including specific training for working with kids who are blind or deaf.
For a Diploma in Education:
– Minimum KCSE grade of C+ and above
– C+ in two specialization subjects
– At least C plain in English
– C in Mathematics for science-based courses or D+ for non-science-based courses
For a Diploma in Education for the visually and hearing impaired:
– Minimum KCSE grade of C Plain and above
– At least C minus in English
– C in Mathematics for science-based courses or D for non-science-based courses
For a Bachelor of Education:
– Minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and above, or its equivalent
– C+ in two subjects of specialization
For Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science:

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is tailored for individuals transitioning into teaching roles.
While some degree holders aspire to become secondary education teachers, meeting the KCSE mean grade requirement of C+ can be a challenge for those with grades below this threshold, as stipulated by the TSC.
