Term 2 and 3 Dates Extended by the Ministry of Education.
The government has decided to prolong the dates of the second and third terms of instruction for the current academic year due to the ongoing floods.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exam, which is scheduled to begin in November for Form Four applicants, is unaffected by these changes. Due to the flooding, the reopening of the second semester for nursery, primary, and secondary schools was originally set to begin on April 29. However, it has been postponed until May 6.
President William Ruto declared last Friday in a national address that all school reopenings would be postponed indefinitely. He did not, however, provide information on what would happen to online instruction, which had been in place during the longer delays owing to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Ezekiel Machogu, acknowledged the drawbacks of online education while reassuring parents that safeguards are in place to guarantee continuous instruction.
Insisting that pupils, especially those in Form Four, continue to concentrate on their academics at home, Machogu stressed the value of continuous academic involvement.
The current year’s academic schedule featured two breaks: a midterm from February 29 to March 3 and three weeks vacation from April 6 to April 28. The first term began on January 8 and ran for 13 weeks, ending on April 5.
The second term was supposed to last for 14 weeks, from April 29 to August 2, but the ongoing flooding problem has forced a permanent postponement, throwing off the original schedule.
The third term, which is also the shortest, is set to start on August 26 and end on October 25. October 28–31 is when national tests, such as the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA), are scheduled to take place.
Notably, the 8-4-4 system’s phase-out means that no candidates will be appearing for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) this year.
Machogu expressed optimism that the KCSE exams will go according to plan and expressed hope that the rains would eventually stop and that schools would eventually reopen when the weather improves.
