TSC 5 Year Listing Target is expected to reach 111,870 teacher shortage by 2027.
In an attempt to alleviate the teacher shortage in Kenya’s public schools, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) unveiled a comprehensive plan.
TSC builds on initiatives launched during President William Ruto’s administration in the 2022–2023 Financial Year, with an objective of recruiting an extra 111,870 teachers by 2027, as defined in the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan.
The director of TSC, Dr. Nancy Macharia, thanks the Kenya Kwanza Administration for their crucial assistance in the previous fiscal year, which made it possible to hire 30,000 new teachers.
TSC plans to employ 20,000 intern teachers during the 2023–2024 fiscal year, with funding provided by a Sh4.7 billion allocation.
In the future, TSC intends to hire 20,000 more interns starting in August 2024 and confirm senior interns using a portion of the 2024–2025 budget. TSC’s dedication to tackling teacher shortages is evident in these preemptive measures.
The present 1:40 teacher-to-student ratio emphasizes how urgent these initiatives are, especially in metropolitan regions and informal settlements.
The UNESCO recommends that all primary schools in the country have a student-teacher ratio of 25.
TSC is adamant that it will reach its 2027 recruitment goals, despite obstacles. By doing this, TSC hopes to ensure that all students have access to high-quality education while also reducing the burden on resources.
This investment shows that TSC understands how important education is to determining the future of this nation.
